5 steps to take if you get in a car wreck

So, you get into a car wreck. You feel a little disoriented and the adrenaline is probably pumping in your body. These are the five most important things to keep in mind for when you get in a wreck.

  1. Check for Injuries: The first thing to do is to check if you or any passengers with you are injured. Call 911 immediately. Most people do not even feel any pain at the scene of the accident, so watch for anything that does not feel right for the next couple of days. Of course, if you are taken to the hospital by ambulance, do not worry about your car, just focus on your health.

  2. Account for the Situation: How many vehicles were involved in the wreck? What is the weather like, is it rainy or sunny? Is there any construction that could have blocked the road?

  3. Move your car out of the street: If you are able to, try to move your vehicle from the street and turn on your hazard lights. If it is night time and you are not able to move your vehicle, put some flares around your car to redirect traffic and most importantly, make sure you and any passengers stay away from oncoming traffic.

  4. Take Pictures: Take pictures of the vehicles involved. Get the other driver's insurance information, the make and model of the other vehicle involved, the driver's license and the other vehicle’s license plate number.

  5. Police Report: Cooperate with the police and tell them exactly what happened when they are making a report. If the police do not get involved, then simply get the important information from the other driver.

Do not under any circumstances admit liability. It is ok to talk to the driver and passengers of the other vehicle, but you should never admit wrong doing without gathering all of the facts.
